What Makes a Person More Likely to Be Stalked?

If you are repeatedly stalked, you may wonder why you are being targeted when others don’t seem to have the same issue.

First, if you are a woman who has been stalked multiple times, understand that there doesn’t always need to be a clear reason. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Some possible reasons why you may be targeted if you are a woman include:

  • The stalker has noticed that you are often alone.
  • The stalker has developed an obsessive attraction to you.
  • You are an attractive, beautiful woman.
  • The stalker wants access to something you have—this could be your work, money, lifestyle, or even your identity. Some stalkers are not just delusional but severely mentally ill and may attempt to imitate or take over your life.
  • You have an online presence, such as a blog or social media. While some stalkers target celebrities, others fixate on people with a visible online presence.
  • You are single. One of the most horrific stalkers I have had is a man who believes a woman has no right to be single and that she has to be with him if she is. Some stalkers wrongly believe that any woman who is single or is open to dating wants to be with them, because they are a man, regardless of her actual preferences. Some stalkers may be delusional with regards to their appearance and intelligence and believe they are attractive, good-looking and intelligent, even when they are not, which is why “you must be with them”.
  • You previously dated someone with stalking tendencies. Some people become obsessive after a breakup and escalate their behavior into full-blown stalking (these are called “rejected stalkers”). Often, they may have exhibited controlling behaviors even during the relationship.
  • You are introverted. Some stalkers specifically target introverts, assuming they are less likely to report the stalking or seek help. Additionally, introverts may be alone more often, making them easier targets.

Have you ever encountered a stalker?

On a side note:

I had disabled comments for the past few years due to stalking. I’ve now reactivated them on all posts, so feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of the page. Please stay polite and respectful in your comments, or I will have to delete them!
