I created this short film yesterday evening. It was raining on my way home from work, and I took the opportunity to make a video about one of the natural elements I enjoy—not every day, but from time to time! Rain can be beautiful, and I have many fond memories of it.
I remember dancing in the summer rain with friends in Shanghai in 2008 and watching rain showers from my home in Shenzhen during the rainy season in the summer of 2012. As an Austrian, monsoon season was a delightful experience.
In Austria, we’re used to “colder rain,” which often comes with cold weather or during chilly summers. While some Austrian summers can be hot, they’re usually not extreme compared to more southern regions or Siping, where summers were usually dry and hot. One year, when I traveled to Xinjiang, the weather in Siping became even hotter than in Turpan, where I stayed for a few days—it reached over 40 degrees Celsius.
As children growing up in the Austrian countryside, we spent a lot of time playing outside, and the elements didn’t bother us much. Sure, we felt cold walking home from school, but being exposed to snow, rain, wind, and sun helped me grow fond of these natural forces. I remember frequently running through cold rain in Austria to get home quickly, changing into dry clothes, and warming up with a cup of hot tea.
