It’s spring 2014. I’m in my third trimester of pregnancy and chat with a 60-year-old Chinese neighbor in Shenzhen.
When I tell her that I’m planning to give birth to our baby in a hospital in Austria, she asks: “What do they do with the placenta after delivery? Will they take it away to turn it into medicine, or will you be able to take the placenta home and eat it?”
