“How Come Your bump Is That Big?”

One day in December 2013, I am at work in Shenzhen. One of my female co-workers points at my belly and asks:

“How many months are you pregnant?”
I answer, “Two.”
She replies, seemingly shocked, “How come your bump is already that big at only two months?”
“That’s because it’s afternoon, and I ate a lot today.”

Have you ever had a similar experience?

On a side note: In the first few months of pregnancy, people either told me that my bump was already quite large or that I didn’t show at all, depending on what kind of clothes I was wearing. If I wore tighter clothes, they’d say it was big. If I wore looser clothes, they’d comment that I didn’t show at all.

This is part of the series ‘Conversations with Locals in China,’ where I share conversations with Chinese people on my blog.
