I have filmed Taishan Mountain in this video so you can see what it looks like in reality.

In April 2025, I visit Taishan Mountain. Taishan Mountain is a sacred mountain in Taoism and is one of China’s Five Great Mountains. It is more like a green hill than a traditional mountain and stands 1,532 meters tall. The mountain can be climbed via stairs, but it is also accessible by a bus that goes to the middle of the mountain, followed by a cable car ride to the top. Once at the top, there are a few more stairs to climb before reaching the sights: Bixia Temple (a Taoist temple), a Confucian Temple, Heavenly Street, and other smaller attractions.

Because it is a revered mountain, it is also packed with people. I go during the week, but the mountain is still crowded, mostly with Chinese visitors. Some are very nosy and want to chat—make sure to be prepared for curious locals if you visit this mountain as a foreigner.

I can only imagine what it must be like on weekends. I’m sure the stories I heard about the mountain being so packed that you can’t even move forward are true.

There are quite a few restaurants and souvenir shops on top of the mountain, with prices being slightly higher than in non-touristy areas — about three to four times higher for some items, particularly food.

From the top, Tai’an City can be seen, although it doesn’t look as beautiful as it does when you are in the city itself.
