In 2022, I visit a hair salon near my flat in Vienna. The hairdresser is a man in his early 60s with curly white hair. The salon is not very large and I’m the only visitor.

I ask him if I still have to wear a mask. He answers: “Keeping your mask on is not obligatory anymore. Some clients still choose to leave the mask on, but if you don’t want to, you don’t have to.”

While he is cutting my hair, we chat about the effects Covid-19 had on the hair salon’s business. He tells me about his clients: “During Covid, some of our clients would turn away from our salon when they heard our boss wasn’t vaccinated. We didn’t mind, but many of our clients did.”
