After seeing the results of my positive pregnancy test, the doctor in the hospital in Shenzhen I’m going to tells me we need to monitor the progress.
She then says, “There are three things you need to avoid: lifting heavy things, falling down, and sharing the same room.”
I ask her, “I’m sorry?”
“You can’t sleep with your husband. You may have different ideas about this in the West, but we are quite strict about this here in China.”
Have you ever had a doctor tell you this?
Explanation:
同房 (“same room”) is a Chinese euphemism for “having sex.”
This is part of the series ‘Conversations with Locals in China,’ where I share conversations with Chinese people on my blog.
