“Are You Married?”

He asks: “Excuse me, I’m looking for Sunshine Western Restaurant. Do you know where it is?”
I tell him: “I don’t, I’m sorry. I’m not familiar with this area.”
“Where are you from?”
“I’m from Austria.”
“What’s your age? Twenty-something?”
“I’m 25.”
“Are you married?”
“No, I’m not.”
The elderly man then says: “You should go and find yourself a Chinese guy.”
“Oh, I do have a Chinese boyfriend, but we’re not married.”
“You already have a Chinese guy. That’s great! I have to get going. Goodbye!”
“Goodbye!”

Have you ever been surprised by the questions of a stranger?

This is part of the series ‘Conversations with Locals in China,’ where I share conversations with Chinese people on my blog.

Superb blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally confused .. Any recommendations? Thanks a lot!

  2. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s challenging to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say you’ve done a awesome job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Opera. Outstanding Blog!
