China Elevator Stories
“Oh My God, I’m Going To Be A Father!”
It takes my husband a few weeks to realize he really is becoming a father.
After being told that I’m pregnant by a physician in Shenzhen, which is before we can do the first ultrasound, my husband is anxious. The doctor has told us that we have to monitor the progress. There were still chances the egg would nest in the wrong place. This and the fact that the chance of having a miscarriage is highest in the first trimester makes us both anxious.
This is my first time being pregnant and we don’t know what will await us. But in comparison to my husband, I can feel my body change and the most pessimistic outlook on what could happen during this early stage of pregnancy can not change the fact that I simply feel and know I am pregnant.
My husband and I go to the hospital to do the first ultrasound during the 7th week of pregnancy. We did get a positive pregnancy test two weeks earlier. When I get the prints of the ultrasound, we both look at them. For a lay person, this ultrasound doesn’t tell anything, but for us, it is assurance enough: The egg has found the right spot.
When we are waiting at the bus stop a little later, my husband starts to realise: “Oh my god, I’m going to be a father!” And while waiting for the bus, he’s singing, jumping around and laughing. I am laughing too, about his joy.
Have you ever become a parent?
